PE

At Burlington Junior School, we view sport and physical education as essential to our pupils’ holistic development. With a minimum of two hours of PE and games weekly, we aim to build fitness, resilience, teamwork, and a lifelong love of activity.

Our PE curriculum follows the Primary Steps in PE scheme, ensuring age-appropriate, engaging lessons that support skill progression and individual growth. We also partner with Tigers Trust to enhance staff training and deliver targeted initiatives that use sport to support children’s physical, social, and emotional needs.

Daily activity is encouraged through our daily mile programme, where pupils jog or run for 15 minutes to boost fitness and wellbeing, with regular challenges fostering motivation and community spirit.

Through quality teaching, structured programmes, and supportive partnerships, we empower children to lead active, healthy lives and develop skills that extend far beyond the classroom.

School Games Mark

The School Games Mark is a government-led award scheme. It celebrates schools' commitment to developing competitive sport within their school and community. It allows schools to assess their PE provision and create an action plan for improvement.

We are proud at Burlington Junior School that we have once again been awarded the Platinum school games mark for 24/25

Year 3

In Year 3 PE, students build key physical skills and a love for movement through a diverse curriculum. In Dance, they explore themed units—World Showcase and Tell Me a Story—to develop expressive choreography and storytelling through movement. Gymnastics focuses on solo and paired sequences using complex balances, including apparatus work and mirroring techniques.

Athletics covers cross-country running, sprinting, and throwing techniques, alongside understanding cardiovascular and muscular endurance. Tigers Trust introduces outdoor activities like orienteering and non-contact football. In tennis, pupils enhance forehand, backhand, and volley skills while learning game rules. The year ends with a personal best assessment and striking and fielding games like Scatterball, promoting accuracy, teamwork, and gameplay understanding.

Year 4

Year 4 students will follow a comprehensive PE and Games programme aligned with the National Curriculum. This includes a 10-week swimming block in Autumn to build water safety and swimming skills.

In striking and fielding (e.g., Quick Cricket), pupils will develop power, control, and effective catching and throwing techniques. They'll also learn to adapt strategies based on game dynamics.

Through Tigers Trust, students will explore non-invasion hockey, and participate in outdoor education activities like orienteering to build teamwork and spatial awareness.

Dance units will focus on creating dynamic sequences with energy and precision, while promoting group collaboration and feedback.

Athletics and cross-country will develop speed, jumping techniques, pacing, and powerful throwing. In tennis, students will work on ball control and adapting techniques during play.

Gymnastics will encourage creative routines using solo and apparatus work. Pentathlon training will cover long jump, throwing techniques, and sprinting events, supporting overall physical development and a love for active living.

Year 5

In Year 5, our students enjoy a variety of sports and activities designed to promote teamwork, fitness, and creativity. Working with Tigers Trust, students play invasion games like football, developing their skills while learning to work together. Our outdoor activities, such as orienteering, help students learn to navigate different areas while supporting one another.

In dance classes, students tell stories through movement, creating sequences that share feelings and ideas. In yoga, they learn different movements for various contexts, performing sequences that express their own stories through poses and transitions.

In gymnastics, students use a large floor space to develop both solo and apparatus sequences, focusing on a 13-part routine. In games like rounders, students combine throwing and fielding skills, showing strength and smart tactics during games.

In athletics, students aim for personal bests in events like the Standing Long Jump, Overarm Throw, and various sprints. Through septathlon training, they improve their running, jumping, and throwing techniques in a fun, competitive environment.

Finally, volleyball sessions focus on coordination and teamwork, as students practice effective movements in games, rotating positions within teams of five.

Year 6

In Year 6, our Physical Education programme is carefully designed to enhance students' physical competencies while fostering teamwork and personal development. In Dance, pupils will perform routines with high levels of fluency, expression, and flair, showcasing their creativity through original sequences. They will effectively communicate areas for improvement and suggest practical solutions, adapting their performances in response to constructive feedback.

Striking and fielding skills will be developed through the application of high levels of coordination, allowing students to perform complex actions and engage in the creation of coordination games. Moreover, in collaboration with Tigers Trust, students will partake in hockey and outdoor adventurous activities, including orienteering, thus broadening their physical experiences.

Gymnastics will encompass solo, paired, and apparatus sequences, promoting individual expression and teamwork. In invasion games such as tag rugby, participants will develop their own methods of attack and defence, working collaboratively to evaluate and reflect on their tactical performance.

In addition, by selecting appropriate shots during tennis activities and engaging in over-the-net rallies, students will refine their coordination. The athletics curriculum will focus on personal bests, with opportunities to adapt and improve techniques in various disciplines. Team events will also encourage collaborative efforts in relays and field activities, fostering a sense of community within physical education.

Schools Sports Partnership

At Burlington Junior School, we are immensely proud to be part of the School Sports Partnership in the East Riding. This partnership fosters a collaborative network that enhances the sporting experience for all our students. Working closely with the School Sport Coordinators (SSCOs) from local secondary schools, we collectively strive each year to develop and expand our initiatives, ensuring a broad and enriching sporting environment.
Our extensive calendar of sports events is designed to be inclusive, catering not only to students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) but also to those who participate for enjoyment and those aspiring to compete. This commitment to inclusivity ensures that every child, regardless of their ability, has the opportunity to engage with sport and develop their skills.
Furthermore, we offer our teachers Continuous Professional Development (CPD) opportunities to enhance their teaching practices and deliver high-quality physical education. The bespoke menu of options provided to us enables Burlington Junior School to tailor our offerings, introducing programmes such as mini medics and sports leaders, which cultivate essential life skills among our pupils.
Each year, we celebrate our students' achievements at a dedicated awards ceremony, recognising those who excel in various aspects of sport. This event not only acknowledges individual accomplishments but also fosters a sense of pride and belonging within our school community. Through our partnership, we are committed to inspiring a lifelong love of sport and physical activity among our students.

Extra Curricular School Sport

At Burlington Junior School, we recognise the vital role that extra-curricular sports play in the holistic development of our students. We are pleased to offer a wide array of sports clubs both within the school day and after school, ensuring that all children have the opportunity to engage in physical activity that fosters teamwork, resilience, and personal growth. Our extensive programme includes rugby, gymnastics, badminton, golf, kin ball, cheerleading, football, and dodgeball, catering to a variety of interests and abilities.
We pride ourselves on creating an inclusive environment where every child feels welcome to participate, regardless of their skill level. This commitment to inclusivity not only promotes physical fitness but also nurtures social skills as students learn to work collaboratively and support one another.
Furthermore, we are hopeful of encouraging children to take their sporting interests beyond the school’s premises by joining external clubs within the community. By forging these essential connections, we aim to enhance their passion for sport and physical activity, ensuring they carry these valuable experiences into their future endeavours. At Burlington Junior School, we believe that fostering a love for sport is key to developing well-rounded individuals.
