Science
Our aim at Burlington Junior School is to provide an ethos and atmosphere where children enjoy and develop a good understanding of different areas of Science (Biology, Physics, Chemistry) according to outcomes stated in the National Curriculum.
We also aim to provide children with an understanding of Environmental Science as well as knowledge about past and present scientists. We strive to ensure that all our boys and girls know that they can access Science as equals and can attain careers in Science related jobs in the future.
Encouraging Science Curiosity
The Great Science Share for Schools (GSSfS) is an annual event encouraging children to share their own scientific questions and investigations. It is a great way to build science curiosity, collaboration and confidence.
Year 3
In Year 3, the pupils are learning about Forces and Magnets, Light, Rocks, Animal including Humans and Plants. Using the five enquiry types (comparative and fair testing, observation over time, Identifiying and classifying, pattern seeking and research using secondary sources) the children are discovering how to create a hypothesis and record their findings.
UK STEM SuperGrid in collaboration with Dogger Bank Wind Farm visited our children, connecting them with the local electricity industry situated off our East Yorkshire coast. These opportunties allow our children to form an understanding of STEM careers and assist them in looking forward into establishing pathways for their own future careers.
Watching the chicks and caterpillars grow and change made me really happy-Poppy, Class 2.
We can't see forces that push and pull us. Magnets can attract!. Chalk is bumpy. I thought it was smooth at first before I touched it-Hugo, Class 3.
Year 4
In Year 4, the pupils are learning about States of Matter, Elerctricity, Sound, Animals including Humans and Living Things and their Habitat, Using the five enquiry types (comparative and fair testing, observation over time, Identifiying and classifying, pattern seeking and research using secondary sources) the children are discovering how to create a hypothesis and record their findings.
Howsham Mill has been a great opportunity for the children to discover the science behind rivers, including how currents work within nature and the strength of liquid. As part of a collaboration with primary schools across the East Riding of Yorkshire, the pupils took part in an energy concert at Bridlington Spa, hosted by York University.
We welcomed the Year 4 parents into school to take part in a 'Stay and Science' session-which was throughly enjoyed by all.
Sounds are made by objects vibrarting. Vibrations go through solids, liquids and gases-Brady, Class 4.
Sound waves are sent to the ear. There is an anvil and a stirrup inside the ear which vibrates to the brain-Layla, Class 5.
We observed the caterpillars over time and saw the chicks grow after they hatched-Freya, Class 5.
Year 5
In Year 5, the pupils are learning about Earth and Space, Forces, Properties of Materials, Animals including Humans and Living Things and their Habitat.. Using the five enquiry types (comparative and fair testing, observation over time, Identifiying and classifying, pattern seeking and research using secondary sources) the children are discovering how to create a hypothesis and record their findings.
Class 8 took part in Children Challenging Industry in collaboration with York Univeristy. The children took part in three sessions linked to the Lanolin industry. They discovered how the product is manufactured and made the products we use in our homes (lip balm, moisturisers etc.) They concluded their learning with an onsite visit to CRODA Industries.
The Royal Navy visited the whole year group and conducted a LEGO STEM session.
Science is fun! There are lots of things to do during our experiments-I am never bored-Jemima, Class 7.
I know the Earth is spherical because of the curve on the horizon-Reggie, Class 7
Pluto is a dwarf planet. Earth rotates to produce night and day.Jupiter's red spot is a storm!-Deniz, Class 8.
Earth is known as the Goldilocks planet because it is 'just right' to have life on it-Gracie, Class 8
Year 6

Fair testing is when we use the same measurements, same resources and the same distances to make it fair-Louisa, Class 10.
Experiments are unique and never the same. I enjoyed discovering how chick embryos develop over time-Isaac, Class 10.
I enjoy science lessons a lot! Explorify makes me use my imagination-Archie, Class 11.
Our collaboration with Bridlington School's Science Department
Head of Science at Bridlington School Alex Goodall, and Mrs. Mawer have coordinated an ongoing annual event aimed at strengthening links with local secondary schools and supporting transition opportunities. As part of this initiative, Year 3 students have completed a pre-assessment on Rocks, Year 4 have completed a post-assessment on Sound, Year 5 have undertaken a pre-assessment on Earth and Space, and Year 6; a pre-assessment on Light.
Science Week 'Change and Adapt'
For Science week, Mrs Mawer arranged for each year group to have their own caterpillars to hatch and metamorphosize into butterflies and, we had the pleasure of hatching and caring for nine chicks.
The children thoroughly enjoyed witnessing the chick life cycle from the incubation stage through to 3 weeks old. Currently, the chicks are enjoying their time on a local farm and the butterflies have been released into our school meadow.

We are part of a STEM Learning Enthuse Partnership with Hilderthorpe, Bempton and Flamborough Primary, Bridlington School and Brandesburton Primary. Such partnerships work together to promote STEM learning, attainment and careers knowledge so to ultimately engage a future workforce in STEM related subjects.
