The Library

Our school library is a vibrant hub for learning and discovery, designed to inspire a love of reading among all students. We offer an extensive selection of engaging and contemporary fiction and non-fiction books, covering a diverse range of genres and themes to cater to every interest. Students have the opportunity to immerse themselves in exciting new titles while also exploring classic literature.

The library features a user-friendly scanning system, enabling children to check out their own books, fostering independence and responsibility. Our Year 6 librarians play an essential role in managing the library, ensuring it remains a welcoming and resourceful space. Under the guidance of Mrs Baxter, we strive to create an enriching environment that supports our students' educational journeys in reading.

Reading For Pleasure

At Burlington Junior School, we promote a love of reading. We have worked with our school council members to create a range of reading areas around school. Our 'Reading Ambassadors' also help to promote reading and are a vital support to our reading curriculum.

This academic year, we have been able to open our very own Library. Mrs Baxter has worked hard to train 'Library Monitors' and every class is able to access this wonderful space.

Each class is equipped with a vibrant reading area, showcasing a diverse selection of books. Teachers devote time to discussing these texts, ensuring that each class is read to daily, thereby fostering a genuine love for literature.

Furthermore, outdoor areas are stocked with books accessible during break times and lunchtimes. These resources are  monitored and cared for by the librarians under the supervision of Mrs Baxter, promoting a reading culture that extends beyond the classroom.

World Book Day

All year groups will partake in the enjoyable World Book Day assembly, which will led by Mrs Baxter alongside our dedicated librarians. The assembly will showcase a variety of literary activities, featuring live lessons and interactive sessions with esteemed authors. Throughout the school day, students will engage in a range of exciting activities designed to celebrate reading and promote a love for books, ensuring that everyone can join in the fun and enriching experience.

Enhancing Reading

To foster a genuine love for reading among our students, we have a  "Reading Bingo Challenge" which encourages children to explore a variety of genres and discover new authors. Each student will receive a bingo card with different reading activities, motivating them to broaden their literary horizons. As they complete each line on the card, they will earn Dojo points to recognise their achievements and dedication. Furthermore, those who successfully fill in their entire bingo sheet will be celebrated during a special assembly, where they will have the enticing reward of choosing a free book from an array of selections. This initiative not only enhances reading skills but also promotes a sense of community and accomplishment among the children.

Each class will utilise a three read sheets weekly, which is designed to monitor the percentage of times read, with results proudly shared during assembly. Classes demonstrating commendable reading performance will receive due praise, encouraging a competitive yet supportive atmosphere. In addition, reading ambassadors within each class will play a pivotal role in motivating their peers to complete the three reads and will relay this information to the Year 6 ambassadors. The Year 6 ambassadors will calculate the overall percentages and present the findings at assembly, celebrating our collective commitment to reading.
