Computing
Our aim at Burlington Junior School is to ensure pupils are equipped with the skills, knowledge and understanding to be confident learners.
A significant factor in this is the ability to use a range of technology and software competently, as we are living in an increasingly technological age.
To help pupils achieve this, they are given the opportunity to develop their basic computing skills, before building on them and applying them securely to different pieces of software.
Year 3
Within Year 3, children will learn to develop their understanding of digital devices, with an initial focus on inputs, processes, and outputs. After which, they will then learn to use a range of techniques to create a story-based animation before exploring the concept of sequencing in programming through Scratch to then create their own programs featuring sequences.
"We love searching the internet." - Year 3
"I like using scratch." - Year 3
Year 4
In Year 4, children will learn to evaluate online content to decide how honest, accurate, or reliable it is, and understand the consequences of false information in the wider world. Following this, children will then develop an understanding of how digital images can be changed and edited, and will then consider the impact that editing images can have and evaluate the effectiveness of their choices. Year 5
During Year 5, children will develop their understanding of computer systems and how information is transferred between systems and devices before working collaboratively online with other class members and develop their skills in working together online. Next, they will learn how to create short videos in groups building upon language and developing the skills of capturing, editing, and manipulating video.
"We enjoy creating stop frame animations" - Year 5
"We like using different documents on google classroom" - Year 5
Year 6
Within Year 6, children will explore how data is transferred over the internet. Initially focusing on addressing, before they move on to the makeup and structure of data packets. When creating media, children will learn how the internet facilitates online communication and collaboration, completing shared projects online and evaluating different methods of communication. By the end of Year 6, children should be able to identify what makes good web page and use this information to design and evaluate their own website using Google Sites.
